MOTHER TONGUE: Healing & Liberation in Black Vernacular Art 2021... by Misty Sol

This year the festival was adopted by Tiny Farm Wagon. We scaled back the virtual events and went outdoors for a series of Garden events in Philadelphia with our partners including:

Bartram’s Garden

The Lenapehoking Watershed Project

The African American Museum in Philadelphia

The Colored Girls Museum

This program is part of the City of Philadelphia’s Arts in Action initiative managed by the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy and also funded by the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts

MOTHER TONGUE: Healing+Liberation in Black Vernacular Art, curated by Misty Sol by Misty Sol

"At the Colored Girls Museum in Germantown, dancer and artist Misty Sol led a discussion about freedom and healing through art. It was part of a four-day festival created by Sol to celebrate the roots of Black art.

'We were talking about the legacy and the strength of our ancestors, as we see a lot of young people involved in current protests and struggles,' Sol said. 'We have to look to our elders and our ancestors to see how far their vernacular practices and art have brought us. We stand on their shoulders. But the younger people have that new energy to carry it forward.'"
